1. Introduction

Safe Drive Africa ("we", "our", or "us") is committed to protecting your privacy across all regions where we operate. This Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, and safeguard your information in compliance with global and regional standards, including:

  • The Nigeria Data Protection Act (NDPA) 2023
  • The South Africa Protection of Personal Information Act (POPIA)
  • The Kenya Data Protection Act 2019
  • The Ghana Data Protection Act 2012
  • The EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR)

Important Medical Disclaimer: Safe Drive Africa is a road-safety and fleet analytics tool. It is NOT a medical device. Our features, including the alcohol questionnaire and AI behavior detection, are intended for safety research, risk assessment, and driver coaching only. They do not provide medical advice, diagnosis, or treatment.

2. Information We Collect

2.1 Driver & Personal Information

  • Identity Data: Email address, password, and driver profile ID.
  • Telematics & Sensor Data: Speed, braking, acceleration, and swerving captured via smartphone motion sensors.
  • Trip Data: GPS-based routes, duration, and timestamps.
  • Sensitive Data: Daily self-reported questionnaire responses regarding alcohol consumption patterns. This is used strictly for safety risk analysis and coaching.

2.2 Movement and Activity Data

We collect Physical Activity data (using the ACTIVITY_RECOGNITION permission) to distinguish between driving and walking. This allows the app to automatically start and stop trip recordings, ensuring that safety monitoring is only active during vehicle travel. This data is used strictly for app functionality and is not used for fitness tracking.

2.3 Background Location

To provide continuous road-safety monitoring, we collect precise location data even when the app is in the background or the screen is off. This is essential for core safety features like speeding detection and crash alerts. A persistent notification is always visible while background location collection is active.

3. How We Use Your Information

  • Safety Analytics: To identify driving risks and provide safety coaching.
  • Fleet Management: To help organization administrators monitor and improve the safety of their drivers.
  • Research: To conduct localized road-safety studies across the African continent.

4. Legal Basis for Processing

We process your data based on the following legal grounds recognized under African and International law:

  • Consent: Your explicit agreement to provide questionnaire and sensor data.
  • Contractual Necessity: To provide the driver-safety services requested.
  • Legitimate Interest: To improve road safety and reduce incidents for fleets.

5. Data Sharing and Disclosure

We do not sell your personal data. We may share information with:

  • Your Fleet Manager: If you are registered under a corporate or fleet account.
  • Insurance Partners: Only if you have opted into a specific telematics insurance program.
  • Legal Authorities: When required to comply with local laws or protect public safety.

6. Data Security and International Transfers

We implement industry-standard encryption (HTTPS/TLS) for data in transit. As we operate across multiple countries, your data may be stored on secure cloud servers. We ensure that any cross-border data transfers comply with local adequacy requirements (such as NDPA and POPIA standards).

7. Your Rights (The "Right to be Forgotten")

Regardless of your country, you have the following rights:

  • Access & Correction: Request a copy of your data or fix inaccuracies.
  • Erasure: Request the deletion of your account and all associated data.
  • Withdrawal of Consent: Disable sensor tracking at any time via the app settings.

To exercise these rights, visit our Account Deletion Page or email privacy@safedriveafrica.com.

8. Data Retention

We retain personal data only as long as your account is active. Upon a valid deletion request, your identifiable data is removed within 30 days. We may retain anonymized, aggregated research data that cannot be linked back to any individual for long-term safety studies.
